IPL hair removal treatments can now free you from daily chore shaving, plucking and waxing giving you silky smooth hair free skin. This effective and permanent hair removal treatment is simple and easy to achieve. IPL is safe to use on all skin types, all hair types and most hair colours. The only colours that do not respond to treatments are grey and red.

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light ( IPL ) uses specific wavelengths of light in order to destroy hair follicles. A related but distinct technique is LASER hair removal, the primary difference is that LASER treatment uses laser-generated coherent and monochromatic light.

With IPL treatment focused, broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin by way of a hand-held wand; this light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb (root) of the hair. The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of pigment is located, as opposed to the rest of the hair shaft. As the light is converted to heat energy the hair bulb is instantly vaporized.

Most individuals explain that IPL treatments is not painful, with just a stinging feeling during therapy. It is worth mentioning that the level of discomfort varies with each patient, depending on the individual’s pain tolerance.

What can I expect from this treatment?

Before your first treatment you will be given a full in depth consultation to assess your suitability for this treatment. We will view the area(s) to be treated and provide you with an estimate to the number of treatments you will require and the total cost. There are no hidden extras and no creams or lotions that you must buy. Please note that should you decide to go ahead with your treatment, a patch test will be performed. This is free of charge when purchasing a full course of treatments and a small fee of £20.00 is applied should you choose to pay as you receive each treatment.

How may treatments will I need?

At The Beauty Centre we regularly update our IPL technology. This ensures that treatments are kept to a minimum and results are always achieved. On average you can expect to receive 6 to 9 treatments for complete hair removal.

Will the hair ever grow back in the areas treated?

IPL works by destroying the hair follicle during its active growing phase. Once the hair follicle has been destroyed it cannot produce any more hair. Therefore the hair will not grow back. There may sometimes be a few hair follicles which have only been “stunned” by the laser so they would need to be retreated. Follicles that are not in the active growing phase cannot respond to the treatment. During a course of between 6 to 9 treatments it is expected that most, if not all of the follicles will be destroyed.

Is there anything I cannot do between treatments?

You cannot remove the hair from the follicle. You can only shave or cut the hair being treated between treatments. Waxing, plucking or using a cream on the area will remove the hair root and this is what we are trying to target and destroy.

IPL vs Laser Treatment and Electrolysis

Understanding the difference between Laser and IPL treatments for permanent hair reduction is important for making the right choice for you. IPL has multiple wavelengths (all between 500 and 1,200 nanometres) that scatter within the skin. As with all light based treatments, IPL works by emitting a wavelength into the skin, which in the case of hair removal targets pigment. These wavelengths are based on the optimal level for absorption by the pigmentation in the hair. At the same time this helps in minimizing skin damage as it uses greater energies at the most advantageous levels. IPL is also considered a safe enough method to be used on patients with darker skin tones. IPL starts to become effective within a period of 6 months (which is six treatments) as opposed to electrolysis which can sometimes take many years. IPL cannot treat pure white hair however due to the nature of how it works – for these clients we recommend an alternative method of hair removal.
