What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers

Effective, Long-Lasting and Safe
Dermal fillers are sterile hyaluronic gels used to plump up areas of the skin lacking in volume, creating a firmer look restoring the skin’s former youthful appearance. Smoothing out wrinkles and softening folds can make an enormous difference to your appearance.

By restoring lost volume your skin will look smoother and softer, giving you a fresher more youthful glow. At The Beauty Centre we only use dermal fillers that have a proven safety record with documented clinical trials. All fillers used are pure hyaluronic acid with the added benefits of anti-oxidants to aid longevity (up to 2years) and reduced swelling. All our dermal fillers are biocompatible with human tissue. Hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1000 times its own weight in water, enhancing the hydration of the skin and its viscosity will maintain the skins elasticity by forming a dense, interlocking mesh. The patented technologies used in the range of fillers we offer reduce the protein and bacterial endotoxin levels, resulting in less, if any, hypersensitivity reactions.

What areas can Dermal Fillers treat?

Sleep Lines Created by pillows while you sleep.  These lines do not generally respond to Botox treatments as they are not caused by muscle movements.

Frown Lines – Diminishes the appearance of the lines above and between the nose. Often we recommend a combination of both Botox and Dermal filler to achieve the best possible outcome. Dermal filler typically lasts anywhere from 12 months to 2 years in this area, sometimes much much longer.

Tear Trough – For loss of volume under the eyes and in the tear trough area between the upper cheek and eyes. It is often necessary to enhance the top of the cheek to help eliminate the hollowing under the eyes.  By doing this we are creating a scaffold for the filler to be cushioned on, avoiding the creation of a “sausage” below the eye contour.

Cheek Enhancement – Restore cheeks and accentuates natural features, e.g. high cheek bones. Often clients concerns are directed at the lower part of their face, that being loose and sagging.  The problem almost always is the loss of volume in the cheeks – causing the skin to hang off the cheek bone and creating loose pouches along the jawline.  By restoring cheek volume, both the jawline and cheeks are realigned and contours restored.

Nose to mouth (smile) lines – Nasolabial folds – corrects deep facial lines and folds. By restoring volume in the nasal folds, the tired look is instantly reversed. This is often another area overlooked.  By correcting this area we often find that the cheeks are also slightly lifted and provides an overall more youthful look.

Smokers Lines – Barcode line above the lips.

Mouth to Chin lines – Corrects marionette lines at the corners of the mouth eliminating the sad downturn appearance around the mouth (oral commissures). This area of the face can create an uneven and unhappy look. By correcting this area the face is instantly lifted.

Chin Enhancement – Smooth and lengthen the lower face.  Many clients are not aware that this area can be treated with dermal fillers and botox.  As we age the chin tends to turn upwards distorting the contours and shortening our features.  This is a quick and simple procedure that can restore the natural contour, lengthen the lower face and enhance the symmetry.

Jaw Line – By creating a strong jawline and lifting out sagging jowls, the entire face instantly looks more toned and younger.  This treatment is often combined with cheek enhancement.

Reverse ageing of the hands – Restore volume and replace hydration.  This is all too often an area that is most forgotten yet always gives away our true age.  By simply replenishing the lost volume and hydration, our hands will instantly look 10 years younger.

How do Dermal Fillers work?

Dermal fillers work by boosting the skin’s natural supply of depleted hyaluronic acid. They add volume to the skin, encourage water to the area aiding in hydration and instantly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles resulting in a natural, fresher and softer look. Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilised, non-animal hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body that depletes with age. Although long-lasting they are not permanent.

What is Hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms.
It binds water and acts as both a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating the balance of water within skin.

What are the benefits of Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers provide an easy and instant answer in reducing the appearance of folds and wrinkles whilst also smoothing and plumping the skin providing a more youthful appearance. The results of a single treatment can be seen instantly with further improvement over a 4 to 6 week period and can last up to 2 years.depending of the product used. Dermal fillers will give you a natural looking result that does not affect facial expression or movement. As our face changes with time, dermal fillers will allow you to control how you look and how you age.

How long will my Dermal Filler last?

One of the great advantages of this treatment is that the effects are long lasting but not permanent. Duration depends on many factors, such as the individual’s skin type, skin condition, lifestyle and age. After your initial treatment, maintenance treatments are recommended at around 12 to 18 months to maintain results. This depends on the individual patients skin condition and life style. Typically treatment with dermal fillers used in facial areas can last up to 2 years.  Dermal filler used in the lips lasts from 6 months to 1 year.

Are Dermal Filler treatments safe?

We use a wide variety of dermal fillers to ensure that each client obtains the desired results. We choose to use those that are scientifically documented and have an impeccable safety record with comprehensive studies to support their safety and efficacy. Dermal Fillers resemble the body’s own hyaluronic acid, significantly reducing the risk of an allergic reaction. More than 15 million treatments have been performed since the launch of Restylane in 1996. Product related reactions are rare. There are some injection related reactions such as swelling and bruising which may occur after any injection; these typically resolve spontaneously a few days after treatment and within a week after injection into the lips. Normal reactions may include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the injection site. After lip enhancement, lips may be swollen for up to a week, but this typically reduces after two to three days with the correct aftercare.

Are there any possible side effects?

Injection-related reactions are considered to be normal. These reactions may include swelling, redness, slight discomfort, itching and bruising at the injection site immediately after the treatment. Such reactions are typically mild and resolve within a few hours. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely rare and they are usually self-limiting. Allergic reactions can however be treated with oral or injectable corticosteroids or the product removed using an injectable enzyme (Hyaluronidase). As with all injections, this procedure carries a risk of infection. It is essential that you follow the aftercare advise given.

What is the treatment like?

Dermal filler is injected under the skins surface using a fine needle or cannula . An anaesthetic cream can be applied although most patients do not require this as many dermal fillers now have a local anaesthetic in them allowing for an almost pain free procedure. Any discomfort is therefore minimal.

When receiving dermal filler for lip treatments, an anaesthetic nerve block can be used which is similar to a dental injection.  Dermal filler treatments are a very quick and easy process. As no pre-test is required, the treatment can be carried out immediately after your consultation should you choose to go ahead. Treatment generally takes 30 minutes. The time differs however, depending on the area and the correction you wish to have performed.

What will I look like after the treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, you may have a slight redness, mild swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of receiving an injection with dermal fillers and should not be considered an adverse reaction. Any discomfort is minimal and transient and will generally disappear within a few hours. In most cases patients can resume their normal activities straight away with no tell-tale signs of having received the treatment.

How long do the results last?

Results are immediate with continued improvement over the following 4 to 6 weeks. Once any  initial swelling has resolved the full effect will become visible. The effects can last up to 2 years. The area under the eyes is reasonably static and this enables the product to last longer. In areas with vast amounts of movement, such as the lips, typically the dermal filler will last up to 12 months.
